Marchantia polymorpha

Gouache on paper

Marchantia polymorpha is a species of liverwort, a bryophyte, used widely in plant developmental and evolutionary genetics research as a model species.

This painting was produced through careful study by eye and under the microscope of a specimen collected in Melbourne, where M. polymorpha is considered a 'nursery weed' due to its prevalence in plant nurseries.

This piece was created to celebrate the completion of my BSc Honours research project focused on developmental genetics of M. polymorpha.
