My love of illustration and plant morphology has led me naturally to an interest in scientific botanical illustration. In 2024, I was fortunate to undertake a botanical art studentship under the supervision of botanists of the National Herbarium at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.
As part of an ongoing project expanding VicFlora, the digital Flora of Victoria, to the bryophytes, I produced 25 illustrations of leafy liverworts. Featuring species from the families Lejeuneacea and Lepidoziaceae, these illustrations are intended to make key diagnostic features recognisable to people identifying the plants. Due to their miniscule size, many features are difficult to capture photographically - but can be detailed clearly with illustration aided by a microscope.
The illustrations I produced are now held in the RBGV State Botanical Collection alongside the plant material and resources studied to create them.
I am eager to continue practicing scientific illustration and to collaborate on work that brings awareness to Australian flora or plant morphology. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss potential projects!
